Germination to harvest
« on: July 14, 2008, 12:22 »
Does anyone have any links for the germination and harvest times for vegetables, I found something for Hydroponics.

If there is detailed info I would be interested in times for the uk, Scotland if there is anything really specific

Any good gardening book should tell you.

Vegetable Expert gives sowing to harvesting times.

These are only ever going to be estimates as the weather will always determine the time it takes things to grow. :D

So I have seen various guides of when to sow, plant and harvest bur was looking for something more precise in weeks for catch cropping and late sowing.

Thanks,

As vegmandan said, the Hessayon expert books give the time from sowing to harvesting, as well as germination times, and a calendar.

There's a useful pocket version of the Veg one.

E.g. cucumber (outdoor):
expected germination time 6-9 days
apx time sowing to cutting 12-14 weeks
sow outdoor late may / early june
sow indoors late april & plant out early june
cutting time aug - mid sept, with a week or two either side for south and north extremes.

I can't think what else you would need to know.

If you can't find a specific book for your part of Scotland via an online search, it will then be a case of knowing your day length, your local climate (e.g. west scotland has the gulf stream nearby), and your soil types.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
