first egg & no spring onions
« on: July 14, 2008, 14:36 »
Balti, our Blue Haze, laid her first egg on Sunday.  And by god did she make a racket!  It was stood on and soft despite the grit and oystershell, but here is hoping for more.   :D

The other 3 don't seem the slightest interested in laying.  Though Balti has always looked the more mature bird of the four.  DH says they have 2 more weeks otherwise it is the pot for them!

We now have no spring onions.  I sew these regularly in troughs by the back door.  I had 4 troughs of different staged of sping oinions which are no more.  the ladies found them yesterday and ate the lot!  :o  :?

Can eggs smell of what they eat?
new to hens
Thanks
T

Well this is the reason that anything in low tubs hasn't survived in my garden

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Probably but I refuse to give in to childish displays of pique. Until they learn to properly express themselves they will have to put up with me

1ST EGG AND NO SPRING ONIONS - UPDATE
More good news on egg front.  We had a small, delicious egg from Balti (Blue Haze) yesterday and yet more racket.  We also had a soft one from Jalfrezi (big Light Sussex) who was a lot quieter on the laying dept.  They were distinct colours and Jalfriezi laid in her special spot where she hides from the others.  She tried to do it in nest box, but I think Balti's noise upset her.  Jalfrezi kept going in the coup and nest box and Balti kept making noise and I think turfind Jalfrezi out.  DH has idea to modify coup again! so Jalfrezi can have some peace.

DH and I think the other two Madras (RIR) and Korma (small Light sussex) will be a few weeks yet.  They are not as mature in size and behaviour as the other two ladies.

Yep Madras is the stubborn willful teenager and Korma is the introvert quiet teenager.

Kate, why don't you try watercolours or oils - they may be able to express themselves more fully then!

I think mud is probably their medium of choice although watercolours would be a second choice. 8)
