Bunny attacked our cabbages
« on: July 01, 2008, 13:41 »
hi all,

we planted out some cabbages (grown from seed at home) on sunday, sadly dont have a photo but they were just under pencil thickness with 3 or 4 leaves on them. Since then some pesky bunnies have munched the leaves off some of them.

my question is have these had it or will they continue to grow? will go and protect them with some mesh this evening if its worth it.

Thanks,

Vaughny

Depends how badly munched. If they've eaten the growing tip I doubt there's any hope for them. Many of mine have had leaves nibbled by slugs and or pigeons, but are still going. One or two got more badly eaten and there's still just a little stalk, no sign of growth at all. This is my first time growing brassicas at all though so hopefully someone ekse will be along to either back me up or knock me down ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

If you have lost all the leaves, then you should dig them up, put some more in and put it down to experience.  Always cover any greens in the allotment - Pigeons, Mice, Crows, Rooks, Pheasants and Bunnies love them - we even have deer come in to our plots.

A very good acompanyment to Cabbage is fresh rabbit or pigeon.  At close range these can be shot humainly with an air rifle making you even more self sufficient - and it solves the original problem as they don't come back again.

Don't know about the plants, but I would mount a counter offensive on the pesky bunny's, raise the stacks to an armed struggle
always have a target
and an objective.

If you do fancy having a pop at them with an air Rifle check the rules on your allotment - some don't allow it.   It is frownd upon on our plot by some of the ladies, but a few of us take it in turns to turn up early or leave late and do everyone the favour of taking the pests out.
