Grass cutting mulch

OK, ground is quickly turning to concrete!! So thought about mulching, but only thing I can get hold of in large enough quantities is grass cuttings. Do I need to use them fresh or are they best left for a bit to dry etc first? I think I need to make sure it doesn't touch the plants themselves?

Grass cuttings are fine as a mulch fresh, no you don't have to worry about them touching the plants BUT

The mulch is to keep moisture in the ground, the best time to mulch is after rain. If your ground has already dried out its a bit late. Sorry.

Thanks green owl - yes I realise it's to keep moisture in. Was thinking of giving susceptible plants a thorough soaking, then mulching them. That said, it's finally been raining here most of the afternoon, so if it keeps up a bit more it will be watered for me!!

Grass cuttings do get very hot, best to be careful.
