Sick/Yellowing Climbing French Beans
« on: June 24, 2008, 22:28 »
Has anyone got any idea what's wrong with my climbing french beans? The lower leaves have started turning yellow (see photos). There's some blackfly, but I'm not convinced that's the problem.

I've just watered well, and sprayed the leaves with liquid seaweed as I felt that I should be doing something.

Comments appreciated,

Regards,

Swing Swang

Thanks muntjac,

Sun not a problem - the photo'd side catches the full morning sun, and is not obstructed by the fence.
Water - probably an issue. I'd been told not to water until they started flowering, so although there's a leaky hose up the middle it wasn't switched on until this evening.
Feed - loads of manure and fish/blood/bone before planting. Nowt since then. Will rectify soonest.

Are they a bit close together? Mine are much further apart - but then it might be me that's wrong!

I thinkit could be competition from the roots of the huge shrubs on the other side of the fence.  They will be sucking the water and nutrients from the soil.

The slope will not be helping in that respect either, the water & nutrients will run down to the left.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would say they are to close together too. 7-8 plants a row would have been best.

I plant mine too close together, so Worzel tells me

They always do well though.  I took this picture today:
