Weeds in pumpkin bed
« on: June 19, 2008, 22:20 »
I dug over a bed for my pumpkin and squash plants a few weeks ago now. I thought I got most of the roots out. Anyway it's covered in weeds again :( lots of marestail and bindweed.

Do I need to redig it all again or hoe them off?

I haven't planted the plants in it yet - but was hoping to do that tomorrow.

Hi sanuka.

If I was you I would give it one more dig over and try and get as much as you can out now as you are talking of marestail and bindweed. It is annoying to have them plus the will take up food that your pumpkin and squash plants will need.

All the best.

Subaru.
Please leave things how you would like to find them.

Im with subaru on this one, sanuka, give it another dig over and get rid of all that you see until you need to plant
Bindweed and mares tail - I know the feeling on that one, Ive got both too

okay I will dig it again, I guess I kind of knew I'd get that reply.

It's just so disheartening as from what i've read the roots go down metres so I'll never dig them all out :( :(

On a similar theme when you hoe marestail and bindweed do you need to remove all the bits rather than leave them to die on top like other weeds? I have both pretty much everywhere - in with the potatoes, beans, raspberries, flowers. Actually I can't think of anywhere it isn't.

You might consider weedkiller rather than re-digging as re-digging will just keep bringing more weed seed to the surface. :(

Or if you are as obsessive as me then hand weed then you don't expose as many old weed seeds to germinate.

I'd agree with the re-diggers. Seed are not the problem, it appears, but the roots still left in. (Both are very difficult to get rid of fully).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You won't ever get it all out by digging so your hoe must be your best friend.

"Never let it see a Sunday"  -  therefore hoe at least once a week
