Poorly chicken - could it be Gape?
« on: June 17, 2008, 10:50 »
I bought a new 'Bluebell' chicken from the East of England show at the weekend and it is not well! It has a sort of cough/sneeze and keeps taking big breaths and stretching its head up high.  It seemed quite stressed once I got it home and the symptoms looked very bad. It has since recovered from the whole 'fair experience' and it is eating and drinking a little but it spends most of its time sitting on top of the run sleeping or taking these big breaths. A neighbour has suggested it could be gape and having looked it up, it does sound similar but does anyone else have any ideas. I would have liked to avoid vets bills if possible but don't want to buy the wrong treatment.
Let me know if you can help,
Heather

Hi & welcome
I would get some Flubenvet wormer & treat her, you can buy it on the internet from bestpet or medpet, it is suitable for gape worm too.
Good luck

They say birds less than 800g in weight but I'm certain it will not be licenced for poultry. If the ingredients are similar to frontline then you could use it as described in the external parasites topic.  But an egg withdrawal period should be observed.

Are we on the same wavelength Aunty??
I just saw it further down too

Check the p&p one of the companies I recommended doesn't charge, but to be honest you need it now, so a call to the vet might be quicker

Extremely good idea, its such a worry when you only have 2/3 girlies that they are getting the right amount.  Still, touchwood, no wriggly things have appeared to date, so I must be doing something right
