A really good book on bees is Bumblebee Economics by Bernd Heinrich.  It isn't casual reading but extremely well written and accessible to the non-scientist.

thr other day at our plot there were hundreds and my wife was a bit nervous as they were on a comfrey plant next to our table where we have lunch .  So to prove to her how harmless and lovely they are  I waited until one  O-Deed on pollen as they do after to much- and picked him up and carried him around until he sobered up and flew away-  facinating creatures they are-
