Greenhouse advice
« on: June 14, 2008, 08:03 »
Hi I am due to pick up my first ever greenhouse today and wanted a bit of advice.

Is it best to plece the greenhouse where it is going to get sun all day? Sounds silly but i thought it may get to hot for toms and chillis.

Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mickeyboy

Full sun is better. You can always provide shade but its difficult to do it the other way round! BJ
There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Dont really know what the ideal temerature is because mine is unheated except in the spring when I maintain a minimum of 5c just to stop frost damage. For shading there are lots of options. You can buy green net type stuff thats quite expensive. Coolglass emulsion stuff that you paint on this is cheap and works well. This year I am using bubble wrap insulation that keeps it warm in winter and diffuses light in summer, first time I have tried it but seems to be working well and will last a few years.
Remember you need lots of ventilation in hot weather and auto window openers are brilliant if you can afford to buy them.

Ideally you want to position it so that the longest side faces due south ,but if this means it looks a bit cockeyed regarding your garden then any way is ok. :D

I have had a few greenhouses over the years. I would try to raise the height if you can. breeze blocks or bricks. An extra foot of headroom does make a difference.
Getting back into gardening and out of the pub

Thanks for that T, so do you lay blocks all around the bottom so that there is no gap?

In early spring you can also line the inside of the greenhouse with bubble wrap to prevent heat escaping if you decide to go that way.  Has it got windows that open?

Cheers for that T, I'm not sure if it has windows that open as I am not collecting it until Tues now. Its 8ft by 8ft so I would hope so.

As for the bubble wrap do you put it all round the greenhouse and leave it up all year round?

Thanks
