Cucumber "perfection ridge"
« on: June 02, 2008, 13:42 »
I bought one of these in a bit of a panic as it looked like my Femspot had carked it (it hasn't, it's doing really well).

Are they suitable for outside? I have a greenhouse but space is at a premium so if it will grow outside I would prefer to try it.

Btw..... what's a "ridge" cucumber  :?:
First timer, NOT enjoying the backache anymore!

I'm growing telegraph improved in my conservatory. The plants seem happy and have produced one full sized cucumber each and have a second nearly ready for picking and a third midsized one growing nicely. However there are lots of tiny ones which have shrivelled. Is this normal? I have been watering daily and feeding with tomato food weekly. Also, they have grown to the roof. Should I pinch out the tip? I read something about encouraging side shoots.

Telegraphs have both male and female flowers but don't really need pollinating. The male flower is just a stem and flower, the female has a teeny cuke behind the flower. I take it that it's the latter which is shrivelling? Despite sage advice, I think your cukes need some pollinating. Use either a cotton swab or a fine paintbrush, dab some pollen off the male tip and onto the female tip. And no, pollinating doesn't make cukes bitter; lack of regular watering and food does that.
And yes, I'd pinch back the growing tip unless you want it to take over the house

Thanks for the advice. Although I read telegraph improved produces male flowers I haven't seen any yet. I hand polinated marketmore in my conservatory the other year and the two flowers were easy to tell apart. Now that one did take over! I'm still finding dried tendrils on the blind cords!

Beegly.

It was such a disgusting shape that they didn't want it.....you may use your imagination. :D

A ridge cucumber is an outside one, but I wouldn't be looking for 'well-rooted compost'.
