Leeks and Asparagus
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:07 »
Two questions I'd appreciate some help with please.
1. I was planting my Leeks yesterday and as I was cutting a bit of the top off and a bit of the roots like every garden book tells you when I suddenly thought, "Why?". So, why???!! :?
2. I found two Asparagus plants in among a load of weeds down the bottom end of my lottie. When and how do I remove them to a safer place??
                     Cheers Chaps and Chappesses!
He's my best buddy, my dog called Woody.
If it works, organic. If it don't, well.........??

Well I dont know either. I trim my roots because it is easier to put in the holes you drop them in. And Asparagus. My mate on the next plot was given some by another plot holder  and just replanted them on a bit of cleared land he had weeded and as long as you have all the root and water them well in they will just be happy there. Hope this helps
I CAME LATE TO THIS GAME, BUT IT'S IN THE BLOOD. I TRY TO BE ORGANIC BUT SORRY HAVE TO USE THE SLUG PELLETS.

Where have you been hiding, Sven?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Normal time to plant asparagus is early spring or late autumn (when dormant really) Depending on your pressure on space you could wait till they are dying back cut them down as usual and move them at that point.

Cheers HH :)
Keep digging

On established clumps of asparagus, wait until their growing season is done, and dig up as large a clump of soil with the roots intact as possible. This guarantees the best success. Pull out whatever roots you see as they don't compete well with weeds.
