putting in things for peas to grow up
« on: March 19, 2008, 13:40 »
am hoping to get some peas started soon- sugar snap ones and ordinary ones and I know that they need wire or netting to grow up. I admit that my diy skills leave an awful lot to be desired but i do have son to help although his diy skills are less than mine! What would be best that we could erect so the peas could have a good grow and be fairly stable. I was thinking of buying some wooden posts and stapling some netting or something to it? shHow far up should I start the netting? or is there a better way? thanks, from a novice!

you're like me Mrs B - hampered!   :D   I hate making ruddy supports for things which drop to bits in the slightest draught     I made a wonderful pigeon keeper-offer, even painted it green but it fell apart when I took it to the car to get it up the plot

Er back to peas.  I think twiggy sticks is easiest. There's bound to be some shrubs nearby or at home which you can stick in the ground before you get your peas in. I sort of stick them in and then cross another one over it if you get me drift, along the row.  It doesn't have to be tidy cos the pea foliage will soon cover them and they'll look just dandy.  Mange tout are bigger, possibly 6 foot so you could make wig wams with canes for those (7 canes per wigwam and then you could add runner beans later)

Straight sticks and some string - or netting wire, or plastic netting. Or a sort of messy combination of all 3, which I favour.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

can't get twiggy sticks :!:    They grow in hedge bottoms.  Go for a walk and I'm sure you'll find loads. Don't forget your secateurs  :D

I just cut mine from the lotty hedges - privet mostly.  You can use things like cornus stems (very tasteful  :D )  Have a look in your garden

I use chicken wire on rectangular frames, post between in each one, they will last years.

Are the structures portable  :?:  or do you grow peas in the same place every year on the same supports...

I am lucky enough to work as a gardener at somewhere where there are lots of cornus.  I have to prune them down each year, so I kept hold of some yellow and red ones.  Hope to make it look a bit prettier than your average pea supports.  Just need to grow some peas now!
