advice urgently needed on strawberry plants?
« on: May 28, 2008, 22:48 »
I am the lucky owner of 7 strawberry plants from lidl (got the last set of six plus 3 free cos they were not in a set and would have just been thrown away, but given 2 to a friend).  I want to plant them into 2 old fashioned ceramic sinks which are about 1 1/2 to 2 feet wide and 3 feet long.  how far apart should I plant them and how many to a pot?  I can't find any information on planting distances.  Although I read somewhere that the further apart the plants were the more fruit each one produced.  I also read you should pot up the runners as 2nd year crops were the best and this way you would always have a 2nd year crop.  Any tips on strawberry growing would be really helpfu, but really need planting distances as I want to get them in.  Thanks :)

You could get away with about 8" but you will have to thin them out next year.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

we have 32 strawberry plants , planted out about 1 ft apart , we have 4 rows of 8 plants ,

towards september we will snip off the runners and plant them into 6 inch pots , putting 3 plant runners in each , come next april we will plant the runners out at 1 ft apart again ,

we keep all strawberry beds for 3 yrs , then its time to put them on the compost heap , at present we have strawberry plants in there 1st , 2nd and 3rd years

hummy hummy , fresh ice-cream and a few in the freezer for Christmas tea and boxing day ,

Peter, how often do you rotate your strawberry bed around the allotment
