New raised bed allotment
« on: May 24, 2008, 15:02 »
Hello everyone I am new to this site and to allotments aswell. i have just started one at the back of my parents garden.
Is it possible to put soil and manure straight on top of grass in a raised bed? i have done that and coverd it to stop the sunlight getting at it and to kill and rot the grass under it. I dont know if it will work.

Not sure if covering will kill the grass I would imagine it would but if you has dug the turf and turned it over that definetely would work.

A layer of cardboard is a lot easier ;) and will eventually break down helping condition the soil.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I had deep raised beds made for my garden last June. The turf was dug up, turned over and the topsoil, manure, compost etc put on top. I have had no grass growing through whatsover but i presume I will be getting a lot of goodness from the turf as it rots down. Good luck. J

The turf is still there with the cadboard too. ;)
Incidentally, I'm growing no-dig potatoes and very little has got through, and that's only got a couple of inches of manure and a bit of straw on top. The few bits that have come through are where there were holes in the cardboard and the manure was thinner.

I think you may have a problem in transplanting radish. I don't think they like it, but you can try.

You should be OK with cues, courgettes & sweetcorn now, but keep an eye on the weather forecast for frost. Keep something handy to throw over them in case.

Carrots are tricky to transplant, but not impossible. If the beds are freshly manured, do NOT plant them there, they will fork.

Hope the beds are big, there's a lot to go in, the sweetcorn & courgettes especially take quite a bit of space.

Windy enough to blow neighbour's fence down.

Local weather station has recorded gusts up to 22 mph. Could be worse, but it's bad enough!

Plant the sweetcorn in blocks rather than rows as that help pollination
Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.
