I've just recently gained some itchy green fingers and have created a small vegetable patch.  I started 4 cucumber plants and have lost 2 (for no reason that I can see, treated them all the same), the leaves went yellow and the plant died.  Is this common?

Whilst you may not have had an actual frost, it may have been too cold overnight for them.

They're called cetriolo (it's in italian- bought them from Seeds of Italy)  am wondering now if it was the cold, it did get a bit chilly the other night am worried about my tomato plants now

If they're OK now, should be alright, but we actually had a ground frost here which played merry hell with a lot of plants.

I'd get some more cues going if you can.

The other 2 plants are fine and my toms seem happy.  I'll do as you suggest and get some more going.

I made mini-cloches from milk cartons to keep the frost (and birds) from my squash. It's still a bit of an experiment because I don't know if the opaque plastic will be a problem, but as as they'll only be on for three weeks it's worth the gamble.

I always find cucumbers rather susceptible to variations in temperature. I've even lost plants within hours of moving them to or from a greenhouse.

I would say the drop in temperature probably kill a couple of yours. Definitely get some more in asap.
