Hen off eggs
« on: May 16, 2008, 15:14 »
My welsummer has sat for 2 weeks on 7 duck eggs.  Yesterday she decided she'd had enough.  I managed to put another broody hen on the eggs after some time and she is now sitting quite happily.  BUT the eggs had gone very cold by the time I got all this sorted.  Does this mean that they won't hatch  :(

The duck eggs will be fine I'm sure. We had a Duck sitting on eggs for 3 weeks then she decided to leave her nest. I kept hoping that she would return to the nest and carry on sitting but she wasn't interested.

It was 6 hours later when I retreived the eggs and took them indoors to candle they were all very well developed but no movement so assumed they were all dead but I put them in the incubator anyway.

Next evening I candled them and all were alive out of 8 eggs we hatched 3 healthy call ducks but as calls are notoriously difficult to hatch anyway we thought this was a good result.
Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you babe and flocko for your replies.  I will not give up, you have given me great hope that these eggs will hatch now.  I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I am not disappointed next week.  I will keep you posted.  These eggs are from a call duck.  Cheers Vivian
