Question re: Hot Beds
« on: May 13, 2008, 20:07 »
I have a regular supply of chook poo/Rabbit poo....could I put this in trenches and cover over with soil then plant after a couple of months or will it take longer for it to be safe to plant in?

Not sure to be honest, as the chicken poo is high in nitrogen,  but the rabbit poo can be used straight away.

You could always put some in a bucket of water and use as a feed :)

Depends on the size of your bucket!!!!!  At a guess I would say a good heaped shovelful to a gallon of water!

A chicken keeping friend of mine regularly makes hot beds. I haven't got enough chickens . . . yet, but that's what I'd do too. When she has enough to nearly fill a pallet sided bay she covers it with a thickish layer of well rotted compost, and hey presto, compost heap is now a hot bed ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
