Brassicas and Beans
« on: May 11, 2008, 17:40 »
I'm still a newbie when it comes to growing veg.

My problem is I've tried to grow sprouts and cabbages in pots to get them started and they're looking pretty pathetic.  They're growing very slowly.  I think they should have been planted out already but they wouldn't survive as they are now.

I've done the same with runner and dwarf french beans, and they don't germinate at all.

The only thing I can think of is that it's getting too hot in my potting shed.

Sprouts & cabbage especially do not require heat, I germinate beans in a cold greenhouse, they are not outside.

How hot does it get?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My brassicas are leggy, I blame the heat, and french beans are a no show, apparently they can be difficult. Mine have thrown a real hissy fit!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

This year's brassicas, only doing red brussels sprouts, are in pots started on the kitchen window sill but as soon as I put them out to harden off the slug decided to go for them, (hadn't got the organic pellets by then) so have had to start them all over again, so only little shoots at moment.  However, I never do my beans in pots I alway put the bean directly into the ground, never had any problems and the only time I had a limited success was when I used 8yr old beans! They, runners, normally go in end of May so hopefully any frosts will have passed, and french beans, I grow dwarf variaties, go in July time.  You can always try again, they will always catch up.

Please don't laugh    but its got up to 35°C in my shed.

I've just taken to putting them outside and perhaps put them back in the shed at night.  Do you think it might work?

I think I'm too late to try again with Brussels, a shame as I love em

OMG even I wouldn't germinate in a temperature that high!!
I think with the current weather conditions you be ok to try them in pots outside and bring them in evenings to avoid any late frosts. Don't leave them in the shed during the daytime if it gets that hot.  Most seed packets these days give the ideal germination temperature.  Give it another go its still early yet.

I know I was a bit slow in realising what I should do, I got there in the end but they look pretty feeble, not sure if they'll grow better now I've figured out putting them outside or not.

Do you think I can resow my sprouts or is it way too late to start again?

Don't say that, we all learn by our mistakes, and the site is here to help, support and share ideas advice etc.
Give them both a go, I have just re done my sprouts and they have germinated ok.  They are in a mini greenhouse at the moment and look ok.  Fingers crossed the slugs don't get em, cos I love sprouts too!

only water the bean seds every other day in 2 ich pots .soaking them to often makes them rot in the soil as for trays of seeds try soaking the tray first then sow the seed sprinkle a small amount of compost through a plastic sieve over them then just lightly spray this ........."werks for me "
still alive /............

Thank you muntjac for the advice.  Especially about overwatering beans, I'll now be more careful.

I think I may have one runner bean emerging... I think.
