I have just moved into a new house and inherited a jungle. I have three stumps from a lavatera, a passiflora (5-6 stumpies) and a climber like jasmin (5-6 stumpies).
What is the best thing to do, Dig as much up and leave the rest of the roots or get something strong from the shops to eat the roots?
Whaddaya think?

Personally I'd go for the dig out option.

dave - i hope your field of expertise is explosive and not gastric issues
Question re the digging out option; my plan is to plant some roses I swpied from the old house fairly quickly - will the old root systems a) make it hard for my thorned friends to establish and b) when they presumably decay underground, will that affect the soil, i.e do I need to add anything to counter the rotting matter?
I hate lavatera - should not be allowed in any urban areas - just too crazy for small suburban gardens

Not an expert in this, (or indeed any), field, but anything that restricts the roor of what you are trying to grow cannot be a good thing.
Rotting is a natural process and INHO you need not worry about this.

Sorry DD, you're on your own
. I vote for Richy's idea. If you can get hold of a pick axe or mattock, they'll make short work digging those stumps out (mostly). I grow roses and they really do need the root space as they're wimps otherwise and you'll lose them. Pot up and water those roses you have, and clear the soil. Wouldn't worry about missed root bits but the stump and immediate root clump are trouble for roses.
