Plums have descended....HELP
« on: May 04, 2008, 20:56 »
I bought a Victoria plum tree last year.  This year it had masses of blossom and every one has fallen off.  It is supposed to be self fertile so does anyone have an answer as to why?  My apple and pear tree seem fine.

Viccy plums are my favourite fruit apart from my friend Andrew    Please help.

Isn't it just normal finished flowering, Ice, as ours did.
Do you mean the whole flower calyx and etc in whole came off, not just sepals?

Yep, sounds cold or similar damage, my apricot blossom all gone this year to it. And when the hails came down, I thought there was the cherries done in but they stayed.

Depends what stage it gets the flowers, how much damage it does, so it will be different effect on even same fruit blossom that does not open at the same time. Not good news though anyhow. :(

Absolutely not frost.  I've monitored overnight temperatures carefully and we've not had any for a long time.  If it was, why would the other blossom be ok?
Apart from that it looks really healthy.

Well, can be a number of reasons, some of which are not too common or likely. If you don't have any other symptoms, it is most likely a weather, or other physical factor, you can start laughing: too cold or too hot, too dry or too wet, also herbicide or other chemical damage, etc.

With your young, newly planted tree, one would think though - in lack of other evidence - that it might well have self-pruned, simply. Too much blossom, too early. Look out for any other strange signs though on leaves and young twigs, but hopefully nothing else and you are in for a good crop next year.
