Can any of you learned ones :D  tell me how to grow cabbages that heart, cauli's that get a firm head on them, brussels that that have plenty of buttons.
I have firmed the soil as per the book I have limed the soil and I have put sulphate of ammonia around the plants. But last year (my first at growing them) every plant hardly yielded anything. The only good thing I harvested was Calabrese.
HELP
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

Widen your repertoire with broccoli, khol-rabi, kale these are the easier brassica to grow.

With the rest, all the above and protect from slugs and birds and catterpillars, keep watering well, especially cauli, also try over wintering cabbage and cauli, they are easier.

And hope for a better season, last year was no joy.
