Marestail is up on the plots opposite me, fortunately its only on the one side - it hasn't crossed the path over to me thankfully.

On another note this stupid novice gardener thought it was asparagus    I have only seen when it is green and looking like small Christmas trees, it was the first time I have seen it brown and poking its way up I can assure you it has caused much merriment down at our site

Here... Be afraid, very afraid!

This is a good line drawing showing it at various stages of development.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes I have! Year after year it comes up. I pull out what shows above ground and have dug down several inches as each growth appears. Unfortunately it snaps very easily so it's difficult to source. So far it hasn't seemed to have spread too much out of control, I just remove the shoots as they appear, rightly or wrongly. & in that small patch I have successfully grown onions, toms & this time, garlic. shrubs haven't been successful, they've coped, but that's it.
I've found other shoots of it in the corners of my garden steps. always wondered what it was, and yes, miniature Christmas trees is how I described it, along with flamin' nuisance!
Thanks for identifying it, just got to eradicate it now

hi , ive heard that you can get rid of mares tail with round up and mixture B, BOTH ARE MIXED TOGETHER IN EQUAL QUANTITIES AND DILUTED AS FOR ROUND UP, the mares tail needs to be trod on to break the waterproofing in the plant , apply the mixture in a sprayer , but can take upto 3 yrs to totally get rid of,

The spores released from the fruit heads they put up this time of year are very unlikely to grow into plants as they need really wet boggy conditions to germinate.

Yes, I know we've had a lot of rain, but I mean Noah's rain.  The roots however will remain with us even on a dry plot until the sun goes supernova

Me too  for a little while until I noticed it was *everywhere*.

I only got the plot a month ago and was really naively thinking how lucky I was there weren't many weeds.
