I've wondered that too, masha.....every day cut flowers are delivered to florists/supermarkets/garages etc in buckets. And next day, fresh flowers & fresh buckets.
My florist is fed up of me, cos when I ask her for buckets she has to go in her lock-up for them, where they're stored to the ceiling. I have to give her 24 hours' notice.
Makes no sense. But if the flower people aren't interested in recycling/re-using the buckets, why does your supermarket begrudge giving or even selling them to you when it's simply their 'rubbish' you're taking?
If I were you I'd write a strongly worded letter to the manager, stressing upon recycling and the environment etc. I would think you'd soon be allowed as many as you like then - supermarkets don't want to be seen as "environmentally unfriendly" these days, and competition is high

I have some flower pots , 93 actually, a guy at my local market gave them to me before i had an allotment. He was only to happy to get rid of them but now i've noticed he sells them for 10p but i guess people still see it as a bargin as he always sells them.

They are 10" accross and 13/14" deep, would these be better to grow spuds in, I normally grow all my tomatoes and peppers in them and they've always been great.

Thats what I suggested. Play on the Green bit. Especially ASDA they do all this Green awareness stuff in the area. I did ask them why they didnt just put them in the lobby and say "help yourself" but I was told they didnt want the lobby congested with people and bins. Dont bother writing just go down and ask the manager.
By the way I put 2 potatoes in my bucket.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

I'm going to have a word with the manager, mind you they're all a bit gormless in my local shop, it's attached to a petrol station, still fairly large shop though but the security guards are, well, security guards!

Our local Somerfields now prefer to send them to landfill rather than give them away, so the security man told me, I was taking some as I always had done, but he said I'm not allowed any more!

That must be worth a mention in your local paper; "local supermarket elects to go down the land fill route".
Pause, be still and observe the world with all your senses - you will gain much!

I imagine you can really add a bit of pressure to them, as they have a lot on them at the moment about carrier bags and packaging.  Just pour the salt on a little more ha ha  They make so much money anyway and take it from local shops, so don't feel bad

Our Morrisons sell their flower buckets for 99p for 10.
Try to be organic but will use black fly killer and a few slug pellets if desperate.

I asked in my local ASDA today if I could buy some of the surplus buckets but was told no, they recycle them...apparently they're returned to whence they came daily when a new batch are delivered with flowers.
Yes garddwr bach, I got some from Morrisons today too, 99p for 8 - but there were actually 13 in there  :D

Get yourself off to ASDA. I work there and they only chuck em at the end of the day. There are different sizes and depths. I have some potatoes in mine and theyve come up a treat. They are free.
You're a bad influence too, RR, making me plan a trip to ASDA this Saturday!

Yep, off to ASDa this weekend. I tend to lose my inhibitions when I really want something!

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

I was lurking around the flowers in Asda yesterday like a stalker.  Hope the security cameras didn't spot me, they'll think I'm a nutter.
Are we nearly there yet?
