Quality question re: Copper tape
« on: April 04, 2008, 12:15 »
I have been searching for copper tape on various websites and have just seen some for sale on the Amazon website which seems quite cheap compared to 'garden' mail order sites.

I am tempted as we have a huge problem with slugs ruining our veg raised beds and our hostas and salad plants in pots.

Does anyone know if there are any differences in the quality of the copper products available and is the old adage if something looks to good to be true then it probably is  :?

Cheers for any help on this old problem of fighting the battle against the dreaded slugs.

65 people took the time to read this but no replies - that's not a bit like you kind folk....is it a daft question

hi, maryann.
I can't think that there would be a lot of differnce in the products. The stuff I have used in the past ( from the garden centre ) has a stcky back to it, do you know if the cheaper stuff you have seen is the same?
The tape I have used worked quite well for me, but I seem to remember some one else on here said that it didn't work for them.
that's the thing about gardening isn't it? ask 100 gardeners the same question, and you're almost certain to get at least 90 different answers......
Give it a go, would be my advice.... :D

The slug question came up the other day I did say at that time that coffee grounds were a great deterrant.  as stated again in  Gardeners world last Friday

gwiz Thanks for reply - all I know about this offer on Amazon is that the brand name is Gotcha - and that the tape is an adhesive type. The price is £2.98 but I can't see on the description how much you get for that and I can't find any details about 'Gotcha' either - although they do seem to make a lot of garden products. I buy a lot of things online due to not being able to get out shopping very easily so I like to be as sure as I can about something befor buying. The money isn't so important (although I do love a bargain  :D ) but just thought I would ask if anyone had used it.

Dugless Also thanks for taking time to reply - I did a search on this subject before posing the question but must have missed your comments about coffee grounds - I find the search results a bit hit and miss sometimes - probably my fault!

I will try the coffee grounds but to be honest it's only my OH who drinks it and only occasionally so not a great amount to be harvested. I imagine a lot of folk will be in this position as well so will need to fall back on other means of persuading the little blighters to stay away.

All options and opinions much appreciated and thanks for taking time to help when you must all be so busy out there beavering away

Quick p.s.

As I didn't see the tip about using coffee grounds to deter slugs - is it correct to assume you just water the area around the plants with the remains of the coffee pot  :?

Given how expensive copper is, if it's very cheap it's probably a thinner layer of metal!  Will do the job, still, but probably won't last as long.

Yes I would say this stuff is quite thin from the look of the picture and probably not a lot in the packet. Unusually for E-bay there are no details although I think 'Gotcha' is quite a well known brand.

Thanks for the link to previous thread on coffee grounds - bit worried now about damaging the plants with the grounds so maybe will give the copper a go.

Just got caught in a hailstorm in the garden. Was like being stoned - they were almost marble size and coming down at such a force they hurt

Thankfully didn't last too long but also had some thunder and now back to bright sunshine  8)
