well I do the sowing carrots with onions
and radish with parsnip

put a chunk of rhubarb in the hole when planting brassicas.  An old guy told me this so I did as he'd said while keeping a close eye on the hedge to see if a gang of old boys wasn't sniggering behind it  8)

last year i did carrot  and onion which then led onto parsnip and onion - worked really well compared to lone carrots which were got by carrot fly the year before.

Companion planting is mostly what you're looking for, and Louise Riotte did 2 books on it. I tried many of her combos and found some worked, many didn't seem to work at all.
One trick someone insisted worked was before planting out peppers to put a used matchstick in the hole bottom. I imagine it's the pepper's need of sulphur in slightly alkaline soil, so I'd rather put a light sprinkle of sulphur powder in the hole - if I had alkaline soil.

off the top of my head;

for wealth, a tied ring of flowering honeysuckle around a burning green candle

for true love; cut an apple in half and eat one half each in front of each other

hang periwinkle on your door for protection

My mum always used to hang a hot cross bun from a beam in her kitchen all year long to help with keeping colds at bay. Also she never used to like us picking blackthorn blossom coz it was bad luck. Something to do with Jesus and his crown of thorns.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
