Ring culture Planting help needed
« on: April 10, 2008, 09:34 »
Can anyone help before i make a huge mistake?Very new gardeners and tottaly confused!!!!!1

We have a new greenhouse and we have put down polothene (cant spell!!)then added pea beach for the substrate.
W am starting to think the only plant to grow in ring culture happily is Toms.
We have peppers/aubergines/Cucumber and a melon, thats if we can keep them alive as they are a bit droopy at the mo.
We have been standing the Toms in water as i thought it would encorage the root that goes down to drink but have read on here they shouldnt stand in water when young!
Basically before we go ahead and plant everything in the ring culture pots, would we be better to just plant the Toms that way and everything else in large pots?
I have seen some tubs in the pound shop that could have drainage holes cut in the bottom, they look pretty usefull.
Or shall we give the whole lot a try the ring culture way.It even only states instructions on the pots for Toms.
I want to do whats right for our babys as i have a vision of sucessfull growing which at the moment is far away!!

Try repotting the toms but don't let them sit in water......it's ok for them to be a bit on the dry side. I would definitely recommend the ring culture method....I'm going to do all my toms, chillies, peppers and aubergines this way.....but not until they are strong healthy plants. My seedlings will be going in the greenhouse (heated) tonight and probably in about a months time I'll put them in their rings and growbags. If you stand growbags on their sides this gives them more soil to get their roots into. A tip that someone gave me was to water the growbag and feed the ring....promotes stronger growth. Hope this helps.  :)
