Pea seeds

Put some in Richy's paper pots a couple of weeks ago and they has disappeared. They were well watered and put in a very warm coldframe.

I think they may have been either too deep or too wet and warm, anyone else had any similar experience??

No chance, they were in a secure cold frame four shelves up. I think they rotted because they were too wet. Iv'e just read that peas don't germinate well in the heat and the frame was hot!!!!

Mine are in the GH and were sewn 10 days ago and haven't come up yet.
When I felt the soil in their pots it was warm so I think mine might have gone the same way yours has. :cry:

Found them, they have turned to slime and dissolved into the compost!!!

Verdict:too much heat and moisture!!!!!

Next time I will give them a 2 hour soak and put the direct in the ground.

WM, keep in mind that peas are a cool weather crop (hate the summers) so heat is their enemy not so much the moisture unless in combo with heat. The 2 hr presoak is a very good way to go, same with bean seeds.

I have put runner bean seeds in the same conditions will they be ok??/

When you say 'same conditions' do you mean heat and moisture? If so, I'd get them out quick as they're cooler weather crops as well. They only keep producing in summer if the pods are picked regularly, otherwise they'd prefer to just die off in heat. Just a 2-24 hr soaking before direct planting is fine. Sprouting time is faster with soaking.

When soaking them add a little paraffin as this will help keep the mice away.

We planted our peas in guttering in the greenhouse about a month ago - they are starting coming up now, but I think we planted them too deeply as they have tekn ages to come through. The emerging plants are nice and strong though

I left my pea plants out on the plot. Meant to plant them and didn't get round to it. Hope the mice and pigeons haven't got to them. Doh :roll:
