Will my toms die???
« on: April 02, 2008, 18:40 »
just potted 60 tom seedlings into plastic cups from work :) but if I keep them in the house the cat will eat them, so have put them into the unheated greenhouse... bad idea?

Cheers

Tomato plants are usually started indoors, I would keep them in the warm till frost is gone and best in full sunlight to grow sturdy. Lack of sunlight causes the plants to grow "leggy".

thats the prob, they are about 4-5inches tall now and had to take them out of the propagators and if kept inside the cat would eat the lot... :(

im by means an expert and will probably eat my words, but ive got around 30/40 toms, 20 cucumber, 20 cougette, and a bunch of other stuff all germinated in an unheated polly tunnel and touch wood are all  doing fine, along with about 320 chilli seedlings which arent too fond of the cold... i would say they will be fine, but like i said i may well be eating my words

Well, I forgot to ask Sg, where his chillies were, really. These were grown inside though and bad weather is forecast, bubble wrap, maybe?

chillis are still in the props in a bedroom..

Put some fleece round the toms for tonight and have dug out the old oil burner thingy for the greenhouse... not that they do much good. :(
I tried to make something to go round the toms inside out of chicken wire.. didn't work.

the only other room they could go in is the downstairs loo, but there is next to no light in there.

damn cat

I too have a cat that likes her greens!   Will move the toms to an upstairs windowsill when I have to get them out of the propagator.  Will have to remember to shut the door though!

They will be OK I think. If frost is forecast you can bung a bit of fleece over. Mine are on my balcony in a plastic greenhouse only partially zipped up because of the rope holding the greenhouse to the railings. They seem OK.
Show us a pic of your cat, it sounds good.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

My toms were started in the house and are now in the greenhouse along with a lot of other plants.  At the first mention of frost get some bubble wrap and cover them in a double layer.
Cheese makes everything better.
