Since the Chicken Out campaign and the raised awareness of what the batteries are like and the plight of the hens more people are taking on ex batts, this has meant that there does appear to be long waiting lists.
the website listed in the other post will give your friend the contact details of his local area co-ordinator. He can then speak to them and get more information. It is worth remembering that chickens do have a long life, although the ex batteries may not live to a ripe old age.
