Hi Nathan,

We went through this dilemma, and plumped for a hanging plastic feeder with anti-chucking-it-all-about ring.

With the open hoppers/troughs they tended to flick through the pellets and more would end up on the ground than in their crops.

We bought a hanging one like this one LINK which seems to have cured the problem.

Depends on what you're feeding them and whether it's inside/outside.

i have found a trough with anti scratch bars over it.

i was going to use solway but they want to charge me 10.00 postage for a water and food hopper!!

i can get a 3kg hopper and a 3lr water hopper for 8.00 localy so refuse to pay there prices.

the area they will be in will be covered, i was just wondering if the hoppers get clogged up

We bought at a local supplier too.

We feed layers pellets and they feed through fine. The hopper has an adjuster to raise or lower the hood which allows a freer flow into the tray.

The main reason for getting a hanging one was to stop them knocking it over or treading in it !  :)  ....it hangs under the coop.

The water drinker is starting to give probs by not bubbling through unless it's perfectly level. I need to try and solve that one but we're getting there bit by bit.

I use troughs for chicks for the first couple of weeks, but take it out as soon as possible as they use it as a perch!!!!!

I've just put the hanging feeder in there, but standing on the floor so they can reach it, but the last couple of nights, they've all been roosting on the 3 troughs!!!

That's pretty much what we started with. Still using the drinker but would like to upgrade at some point. Again, on a tight budget. Some things you can economise on, some you can't.

We got them at Old Leake, just north of Boston. I think there's a couple of members live there.

Annie - I think you need to read them the book of poultry behaviour so they know when is a trough not a perch !  :D

They certainly do the job, though the feeder will get trodden in and knocked about.

I put ours on a couple of bricks which meant it just got knocked over occasionally.

It depends how boisterous yours are. Being bantams they may not have the weight behind them to do much damage.  :)

You have to go for what suits your budget and although there's better, there ain't much cheaper !  8)

Ideal.

I got a piece of 4mm ply, about 10" square, screwed some battening around the edge, with a piece of batten screwed underneath and wedged the underside batten between bricks. This acted as a tray for the feeder which at least limited its range when they clattered through with their elbows flailing !!  :D

they're still not very lady like but are improving.

I tried handfeeding them grapes the other afternoon and it reminded me of a looting scene in Beirut. I just about escaped with all fingers intact.  :?

We used a length of square guttering attached to the side of the run with the closed end attached.  To stop them flicking food about we have put thick electrical ties around it so that they act as 'bars' across the guttering.  It was mainly becuase we were trying to use stuff we had laying around but it works very well!

Hope it makes sense but ill try and take piccies at the weekend as it works well for us and might be a useful design for others with messy ladies!

its fix low enough for them to reach but high enough for them not to stand in it!!!!
