A question about crowing.
« on: March 14, 2008, 11:40 »
Hi. Hope you can help. Does a cockerel have to be a certain age before it starts to crow? Monty hasnt let one go yet, and Im a bit concerned.

Or should I just be grateful?!

They usually start to crow when they are about ready to become "active"

How old is he  :?:

What exactly do you mean by "become active" Aunt Sally ?     Mine are very fit and do an awful lot of running around.

I'm sure that there must be people on here who would kill to own a none crowing cockerel.

My Cheekie, (now happy with his new hareem), must have been 8 months at least before he crowed! I was convinced s/he was a hen as another cockerel from the same brood was crowing by 5 months and obviously a boy! Buster was a much larger cockerel and a cross whereas Cheekie was pure silkie so maybe it depends on the breed a little! I also wonder whether they keep quiet longer if there's a bigger boy on the block to beat them up if they eye up the girls?!

Good luck with your cockerel, he'll crow when he's ready...but be prepared for a pathetic first attempt...you'll wonder what ever it is!

Unfortunately I dont know what age he is, as I didnt get him, OH did and he doesnt speak French!
He does sound a bit raspy in the throat/chest department, so hope he doesnt have a cold. He looks in fine fettle, eyes are bright, he's eating well, and making up to the girls(and vice versa...its so funny to watch!)

Ill keep you posted as to the crowing. Hope you liked the picture I posted of him.

Our first little boy was only 12 weeks when he started to crow! He was so young that when the neighbours said they had heard it we didnt believe them!
