too many oranges and lemons
« on: March 05, 2008, 16:50 »
Any idea as to what I can do with them????  Got a whole drawer of sliced frozen lemons, made lemon curd today going to make lemon and orange pickle tomorrow.... but still loads left on the trees!  Don´t like orange marmalade- have made it before and given the whole lot away!! Can´t give oranges to the neighbours, they have plenty of their own!! Local shops have their own suppliers and we are too far off the main road to advertise on a board outside :(  One shop had local oranges for 50cents a kilo, hardly worth picking and transporting them the 12 km into the town for that sort of money (guess the original owner would get around 25c a kilo) Anyone fancy a plane trip over to pick oranges and lemons to take back????
We are going to take 3 of the trees out and plant either plum or apple, at least I can make plum jam and eat the apples, there is only so many oranges you can juice or eat in a day

I freeze some lemon slices into ice cube trays so that I always have some available for the next G+T... or Pimms ... or lemonade
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

have any others around not got any thing to trade with like plumbs or apples.  I know you mentioned they got oranges but have they all? Or is it not worth taking them into town to trade with market stall holders?

Orange and lemon marmalade?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I had wondered about freezing the juice, I will give that a try.  As for marmalade UGU UGH UGH  I blame it on my mother- she used to force feed us minidex when we were little and that is what orange squash, boiled sweets and marmalade remind me of!  As for the drizzle cake.... I have made a low sugar version (I´ve got impaired glucose tollerance, the bit before you get to diabetic)  I made lemon curd yesterday... lovely, I ate half a jar of it last night- very bad- but it was soooo nice- had a high count for my blood test this morning  I´m going to make orange and lemon pickle (that doesn´t remind me of minidex!)  All the neighbours have orange trees and no other fruit trees!  We did have a sharon fruit tree, we dug that up in the autumn as it was huge, it was a fight as to who got the fruit me or the birds.  You have to eat it very ripe otherwise it is disgusting.  Hubby doesn´t like them so it was a waste of watering a big tree when I can´t eat that much of it.  The neighbour now has it in his garden.  We are going to plant another plum  instead.  We have given loads away (oranges) to a man we have gotten to know- in exchange for horse manure and lovely compost- better than cash!

natural yoghurt

Method
1.Quickly fry the lamb, puts aside.
2.Soften the ioniona dn garlic gently in the same frying pan and return the lamb to the pan.
3.Add cinammon and cumin, cook for a minute, then add the rest of the ingredients. Seasona dn put in the oven. 190 degs C, 375 degs F
4.Cook for an hour until lamb is really tender.
5.Bung a bit of natural yoghurt on top to serve.

I make this with bulger wheat or couscous, or potatoes daughinoise adn peas.
Pam, i don't think this will work with pork....it does with chicken though.Let me know if you like it!
