Hello everyone - newbie welcomes tips.....
« on: March 02, 2008, 19:26 »
Hi all

Thought it was about time I stopped lurking in the shadows and finally introduced myself.  Must say that this forums been an absolute mine of info!   :D

Nevertheless am still full of nervous excitement.
Have built the chicken house - it's trapezium shaped due to wonky garden walls - will the chickens mind?  Its 1.5m x 1.2m x1.2m (roughly).  The run is about 5m squared with shelter under the house (but triangle shaped) but they'll only be in it for a few hours on weekday mornings whilst I'm at work and the rest of the time they can have the garden - will this be OK?

Have bought feeders etc - just waiting for 8 ex-batts at the end of the month.   Can't help thinking that somewhere there are 8 very miserable girls and i just want to say 'hang on in there ladies - not much longer now...'

Would welcome any tips on helping them settle in - and did I mention I'm v v v excited?

Piccies of house will follow - just trying to upload via photobucket but on dial up I think you might all have to wait until Christmas!!!

In the meantime thanks for your tips - am reassured that my new girls won't be too 'geometrically challenged'....

I've had mine just over a week (or is it 2) and they're part of the family.  I'm no expert but you will find sooooooooooooooooooo much advice and support on here that you almost don't need to be as long as they have food water and the right living enviroment and a huge dollop of love and attention from you they'll be very happy and lucky chooks!  :D
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

like wildone ive only had mine a week, two are laying already so they must be happy, theyve got loads of confidence, even trying to break out when i open the run gate

so long as you give them what they need, food and water, somewhere to sleep, somewhere to lay eggs, and a bit of space to forage about, they will be fine.

mine like cabbage stalks, which i scrounge from the cook at work, and bran flakes. Although the boss, bocky i think it is, keeps trying to eat my wedding ring :D
