Dug my first jerusalems of the season Sunday and the yield is good.

Image shows one plant. Given the water shortages this year, these have out-performed potatoes by miles and I am now grateful for my decision not to grow spuds.

The only pest to speak of is slugs. These eat the emerging shoots in the spring, and the tubers over the winter period. Once the plants get going though, they are far too tough for the slugs and the tubers develop rapidly in the autumn. Crop can be harvested and stored in a tub of compost or left in the ground to dug as required.

Plants do grow very tall and produce a dense screen of foliage so need to be planted where they do not cast too much shade over other crops. Best grown in fertile soil, they are drought tolerant and outgrow most weeds. Frost hardy.

I will have loads of smaller tubers suitable for planting so if anyone wants some just get in touch. Variety is unknown as I purchased the original stock from my local organic shop.

Biggest pest with jerusalems is them... Once you've got them, you'll never lose them, so I'm told!

useful to mulch heavily with straw so's you can dig em up on a frosty day too  once the leaves die off I cut mine down to stumps so they don't blow over in winter gales, but leave a bit sticking out so you can find the tubers
