my pond
« on: July 12, 2024, 07:56 »
My pond arrived, its a 1000 liter one
Had to dig a hole big enough to fit it in
(think the size of a grave,  worried the neighbours)
I made it look decent with a wood surround, then bought a waterfall filter
No UV light though
Left it for a couple of days to let the chlorine  dispate
It started to go green, so I bought some chemical to clear the green stuff, that didnt work
I bought some snails in the hope they would clear the water, algae was starting to grow in there
I added a trip measure of this pond clear
Now the pond looks like pea soup
I have put in some pond plants, the floating type, in the hope that will help, then underwater pond plants, oxgenerating plants
I have tried everything I can find on the market to clear the green stuff from my pond
So any recommendations or suggestions how to clear this green water and stop it coming back ?
I havent put any fish in it yet
It's all about the journey, not the destination

Is the green more like a soup which may be due to algae, or is it duckweed? Is your pond in the shade or sun?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I had forgotten about the barley bundles, ordered 3
Thanks for the reminder
I've been using this other stuff Vanquish Essence of Barley Straw

Goosegirl
Its not pea soup, (it just looks a green)but really looks like, its not duckweed

Is it worth draining the pond, now, I can use a pump and put in my water butts (save water and the planet, kind of thing ;) )

I put in several bundles of barley straw, cleaned out my filter box (plenty of sludge in there)
Washed the filter pads and the filter mediium (little plastic balls that help filter the pond water)
The floating pond plants have got quite big (and flowering) but I have had to trim them back a bit
The water is still green though, but the fish seem happy enough, when I can see them
I've bought some snail to eat the algae that grows in there
I have bugs in there that look like tiny shrimp, they live under the bricks and rocks I have in there (I think they eat anything rotting in the pond)

Any further suggestions ?

It sounds like things are in the process of balancing themselves out.  The tiny shrimp things are the ones that eat all the rotting debris and if they are thriving, that is a good sign.

The best bet would be to keep on cleaning the filters but leave the rest of it to sort itself out.  The algae spores bloom because of nutrients in the water and lack of competition for sunlight, but that is always the case with a new pond.  As the plants grow, shade more of the water and use more of those nutrients, the algae will subside.  Fish don’t mind it, it just annoys humans  :)

I've been doing some internet searches about green water
They have said Swan mussels help to clear green water

I bought 100 rams horn snails, put them in a bucket with my pond water, plus a bit of green weed in there, well they did clean the water, but the bucket is about 2 gallons, at that rate I think I would need several thousand to make any impact in my pond

Ramshorn snails breed like nobodies business, so you may find your 100 do more good than you think  ;)

Just taken delivery of these Swan mussels, one had a hole in the shell, hoping it will repair its self (but its floating)

I think they are going to have a hard time, my pond is like green pea soup)
I hope they are hungry

I didnt realise how big these mussels are, they are actually bigger than my hand

I've put two in each pond with another 3 on order
I've been told they can clean uoto 40 liters a day, I dont know how true that is, but that sounds a lot of work
