A sign of old age, anyone else?
« on: July 17, 2024, 11:44 »
I'm not too bad on normal food stocks as my daughter does my regular food shop but other things like toiletries (shave gel, deodorant, razor blades etc), whisky, chocolate biscuits, Trebor mints, denture cleaning tablets and mouthwash are just odd examples; I must have at least six months stock in the cupboards. I can't really explain this other than some kind of odd obsession when I visit a supermarket. Anyone else?

It's not just you, here we often get power cuts and the water goes off, so I seem to have a lots (and I mean lots!!) of bottled water and candles  :lol
To make it worse, because family can't think of anything else, I need they often bring fancy candles whenever they visit. I'm not being ungrateful, you understand - I just really, really, don't need to buy more  ::)

I buy non-perishables when they're on offer - as it usually 3 for 2 and the like so there's usually a surplus. Toothpaste, vitamins and cod liver oil tablets are always falling out the cupboard as a result. It would be better if they just reduced the price.  I've caught myself on several occasions just buying the same stuff each week out of habit without actually checking if it's needed.

That's exactly me. I bought 2 aerosol tins of shaving gel on Monday in Asda and then discovered that I'd already got two in the bottom of the airing cupboard

I think one rational reason for this behaviour is the fact that we have gone through Covid and the supply issues that caused. A similar example was those who had gone through rationing in the last war and therefore tended to want a buffer stock of key supplies.
I must confess my wife tells me I collect way too many tins of chopped tomatoes. This is despite the fact that I grow tomatoes. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of advanced ageing.
Keep digging

My husband says I’m the best quartermaster that there ever was. We rarely run out of anything as I buy things we use when on offer, ‘today’s bargain’ was a pack of Heinz baked beans for £5 or 2 packs for £8. So we’ve now added 24 tins to the 48 that are in the pantry already. I think the key to stocking up, is to keep them all together & rotate date sensitive items so it’s not a waste of money.

I fear running out of something so I always have one in use and one in stock. I also try to rotate my food stock so I use the earlier ones first from the freezer. It maybe just a comfort thing to know you're not going to panic and it also keeps your brain alerted. Prescription tablets are a different kettle of fish because, if you order something too soon, you don't get them and they don't tell you that. Order too late and it's panic stations!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I prefer Branson beans and tend to buy a tray of them when on offer too.
They sit in the garage. I must confess I don’t worry unduly about expiry dates with tins though obviously one must be careful with some items in the freezer. There’s no point saving money only to find what you have frozen is useless due to freezer burn.

I've been through that too many times

Yes, holds
up old hands !   I do all those things, well except the shaving cream bit.    I always go to the reduced bit first in my local shop, and buy some more of what I bought last week.  Mrs B
