That's rather interesting, as the damage looks like classic wireworm damage, but the creepy-crawly doesn't look like a wireworm!

Can't tell from your pic - did you notice whether it had a 'head' and legs (if not, it could just be an opportunistic earthworm, probably not responsible for the damage...)

Millipedes in general don't cause that sort of damage, although certain species can move into the holes created by other pests to feed on the decaying material.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

we had quite the same damage on our potato crop this year although I put it down to where we they where planted as this part of the plot is a tad on the wet side and heavier ground and also near a hedge last year we planted our potatoes on the same plot but on the other half we  had very little damage and a more productive crop

although  we did sow green manure on that half tilly mustard I don't know if that helped ? so next year if every things alright god willing we intend to plant our potatoes on our other plot that we sprayed late autumn with roundup  at present the ground is weed free as we sowed green manure on that plot 2years ago hopefully this ground mite be more bug free ?
