Ferline tomatoes discontinued!
« on: February 13, 2023, 13:52 »
This is my favourite all rounder with good flavour and blight resistance. It’s been discontinued!  Don’t know what to grow in its place. Apparently there are better blight resistant varieties around, like crimson crush. I grew that last year and wasn’t impressed, I found the flavour boring. For more flavour but possibly less disease resistance I do Costolutto Fiorentino, and also sweet aperitif but I like a nice easy going salad tomato too. Any suggestions for an alternative?

Ferline are still advertised as available from Homebase.

I tried that but when you enter a postcode and search all the local Homebases they don’t have any.

You might be able to find on Amazon or suchlike.

If you find some, research methods of prolonging seed shelf life through careful freezing and careful thawing before planting.  You will want some silica gel sachets, "recharged" to dry them out, and some small glass jars with a good seal to try this.

Thanks subversive I’ll definitely try that if I’m lucky enough to find some seeds.

I’ve found Ferline to be less and less blight resistant over the years, so maybe they are being withdrawn because of this.  I have got some Crimson Crush, but you are right about them not being the best flavoured, so I went searching and found these.  This will be the first year I have grown them, but they look promising.  This seed supplier is pretty cheap as well.  You get plain packets with no pictures, but who cares when they are half the price of some of the main seed suppliers  :)

Thanks new shoot. I jumped the gun and went to real seeds and ordered Costolutto genovese, Dr Carolyn, Estate and Stupice. Time will tell how they do. I did grow Costolutto last year and it did very well, but it was a remarkably low blight year. Good luck with the Burlesque.

I've used Premier a few times NS and the seed quality is excellent even at the low price.
