sour milk
« on: January 03, 2023, 14:57 »
we still have our milk delivered by a local milkman and over Christmas we had 1 pint completely sour then after that a  2 days later another went sour  I looked on the bottle but there was no use by date on it  so should the milk bottle be stamped with a sell by date ? we also buy some milk from the supermarket and never had any problems with there  milk going sour and its kept over a week in the fridge before we used it its just convenient to have it delivered to support or local milkman but we did have some sour milk in the summer but never in the winter months if this keeps up he will be getting his P45

To be fair, he might not know it is sour (most likely he does not bottle it).

He might appreciate it if you told him, maybe even help you out?  Or might tell you to _______ off.  Either way, you will know if he needs that P45 or not.

Sour milk...best for pancakes. If the milk had gone off my Dad used to say "Theres ducks on the pond" when looking at his tea.

As a going away present from HMtQ  I sailed across "The Pond" on board "Lord Trenchard" and we called in at the Azores to stock up on vittles.  We bought 'long life' milk in sachets from the PX and stowed them in the bilge, when the time came to break out the milk we found the schets were drum tight!  Long Life my arris!
We very carefully carried them to the side and slung them overboard, I swear they were exploding on hitting the water.  We had a cook on board who told us to safe a couple for pancakes and very good they were.

As we approached Chesapeake Bay and Annapolis we callet customs/border service and when telling them that this is Lord Tenchard,  the reply was "Gee, am I speaking to a REAL Lord"?!

Lord Trenchard later blew up in harbour due to a gas leak taking a chaps leg with it.

Cheers,  Tony.  More sandbag stories if you want!

We sometimes get a few bottles and keep one in the fridge and put the rest in the freezer so we don't have to worry about the dates. The 2 pint bottles can leak a bit on de-frosting so I put the bottle into a container before putting it on the fridge door shelf.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

From what I remember about working in a farmers dairy, he collected & pasteurised the milk the same day, sometimes the following day, it would then need to be cooled which was another day or two, then bottled and delivered over the following two days... so it was between 4 - 6 days old before customers even got it!  :) It seems to be common these days for bottled milk to last only 2 to 3 days before turning!

Our pasteurization must be different here.  We currently have a gallon of milk that was purchased about 3 days ago, with an expiry date on it of January 18. That sort of spread on the expiry date is common here. I honestly can't recall the last time we had a carton of milk go bad. We occasionally go slightly past the date and the milk is still fresh.

It comes into shops with similar dates here in the UK.  I was putting out milk at work yesterday with dates of 18th and beyond. All milk should have a use by date.

If it is bad straight from the shop or only a couple of days later, their milk chiller is on the blink.  Either that or they have left it out of chilled storage too long.  With milkmen it would depend on whether their van was equipped with chilled storage facilities and how long the milk stays on there.  All supermarket ones are, plus they get reloaded every couple of hours, so shopping is never on the van that long.

The milk I used for my latte at home this morning was dated 6th and it was fine.
