I have always just used multi-purpose compost for sowing my seeds but somewhere on this site recently it was said that you really notice an improvement if you use proper seed compost. It is more expensive so I wanted to check the Forums opinion.

Q: Is it worth the extra cost and if so does anyone have a favoured brand?

I think it does help for small seeds I generally just use John innes no 1. I don’t have a favourite brand though. I think it come from various suppliers.

Keep using your multi-purpose but sieve it for all but the biggest seeds.

My OH was asking me the same question because of my poor germination of veg and flower seeds this year when I used an MPC instead of a John Innes seed compost. Apart from the fact that seed compost doesn't have much in the way of nutrition because seedlings don't need much, which is the better option for the best results between MPC and a soil-based compost.
