Thanks for the advice - I think I’ll just leave them. It’s a new bed this year but the crowns were 2 years old when purchased last year. 2021’s wet spring weather prevented us finishing their permanent bed so we heeled them in a shallow raised bed and left them. They seemed ok & threw up some ferns last year, so we moved them with soil clumps to their permanent site in Feb. Not sure if all have survived as they are a mix of early/mid/later varieties and I’ve Lost the plot on which is which now so can’t really judge if they are doing ok or not. They seem to be just sending up one spear at a time, is that normal? We started cutting these as they came a couple of weeks back, expecting more to explode while we we were away, but growth still seems sporadic so I’m leaning towards leaving them again this year.
