Dessert gooseberry recommendations
« on: February 19, 2022, 17:26 »
I put in a Hinonmaki Red a couple of months ago but think I `deserve another bush.
Gurgling showed up favourites such as Leveller but also Rokula.  Looking for dessert type and ideally to broaden cropping before or after Hinonmaki.
Anyone got views on the Rokula and on any other varieties they've tried

Do you have a preference between green or red goosegogs?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well, Yorkie, I'd prefer red but only on same principle as preferring red wine gums - it's psycho;ogical mostly.
So, not really fussed colour or about thorns - gathered that thornless crop less well anyway?

I have a couple of Xenia gooseberries and they are very productive and sweet when fully ripe.  They are sometimes sold as thornless, but trust me they have a few thorns.

They are red coloured fruit.

Xenia for me as too. Big crops of large red berries, already sweet enough to eat straight off the bush in summer and fabulous in a salad  :D
