I sowed a lot of white Lisbon onions 5 seeds per module for spring onions and they were good . However I did not use them all up and they have gone on to produce a really nice white onion about 6 -8 cm diameter. Does anybody know much about their storing qualities ? If the are a good keeper I could be tempted to sow some for storage.

They sell these as scallions where you are, don't they Jambop? I often saw them in the shops years ago, but didn't realise that they could be what you describe!

To get to that size is a great result, but if they don't do what maincrop onions do, i.e.fall over and dry, I guess thay would probably not do very much, but why not try?

Yes they do Growster but the onions I have grown don't look like that type . I will have to wait and see what happens next the tops are still green and the onions still growing so far as I can see. Of course just because the were sold at white Lisbon does not mean they are? What I will say is they are a very hard onion.

Then you are very lucky, Jambop - a spring for the price of a scallion, or even a biggun!

We grow springs in pots, then just plant the whole pot out - it seems to work OK, but they don't get as big as yours!

Yep I pick spring onions at various sizes - never big enough to be proper onions but big enough for more uses than just salad. Mine go into ready meals (big pan of pasta with whatever appears suitable from the plot and tinned tomato) that get frozen and used up regularly. This time of year that uses up a lot of gluts.

OH left mine so they then got very thick stems and now he's just pulled some to add to a ratatooey.

we grow several varieties of spring onions we started of by sowing and planting  spring onions in the allotment but they seem to get very weedy so we decided to try growing them in troughs at home and it worked for both white and red spring onions well all the varieties grown we  grow spring onions to overwinter in troughs white Lisbon  winter hardy
