Theoretically there is no need. I do not know what others think about these pots but personally I do not use them because I found that the roots of the plants I was growing found it hard to get through the pot into the soil and therefore the rooting of the plant was a little restricted. If I was going to use these pots now I would break open the bottom of the pot entirely to let the roots out and maybe establish quicker in the soil.

I use these for my beans and sweetcorn every year and they're great.I don't put any holes in, I find they drain ok and the roots get through into the soil pretty quickly. The only thing I do like to to do is rip the top 1cm of card off at plating time to prevent the pot from wicking water away from under the ground.

I posted this question because I recently had red kidney beans fail after putting them in these pots. I had germinated them in compost first but they dried up in the pots.

I’ve used them a few times & my experience is that it’s a fine balance of getting the watering right before planting out. Too much & the seeds rot & pot collapses, too little & they dry out. Before planting they need a thorough soak & then plant so there is no pot above the ground as Plot1 problems says as they wick water away from the plant.
