Jerusalem Artichokes in Containers Question
« on: March 20, 2021, 22:40 »
Hi everyone,

I have 6 Jerusalem Artichoke tubers and 3 big fabric pots (43cm / 17 inches wide, and 50cm deep). All my research says to put one tuber in each container but it seems a shame to throw away my (already-sprouting) spares, and the pots are quite big... I'm wondering if I can get away with 2 per container? Or would having 2 plants in a pot negatively impact the plants' yields?

If I can put 2 per container, what's the best way to do it? The recommended 30cm / 12 inch spacing would mean each one is growing right on the container's edge which seems non-ideal, but I'm not sure. Newbie here with little clue! I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

The instructions are only vague guides in my opinion. As long as you keep them well fed and watered they will do fine with two in each container and you’ll get a bigger crop than if you throw the spares away. I’d space them about 9” apart

Bear in mind that they get very tall, so site those fabric pots in a sheltered place.  The foliage will act as a sail and topple the pot over if not.

Jerusalem artichokes are very easy to grow, so I am sure they will cope with 2 to a pot so long as you follow Nobbie’s advice and look after them well  :)

I'll keep an eye on them on windy days in light of your advice New shoot :)  I'm planning on putting them up against a fence, supported by an 8 foot bamboo tripod, so hopefully that will be sheltered enough. And the pot should be quite heavy once it's got about 60L of soil in it so fingers crossed the pots will hold steady alright.
