I grew strawberries from seed last year. They took a while to germinate and grew very slowly - in fact so slowly I went out and bought some plants to put in my lottie. I did get some very nice but small strawberries from them later in the season. I still have them in pots but intend to plant them on my lottie this year.

Do you know what type the were, i am looking at the alphine type 'Golden Alexandria'  & 'Temptation' & 'Ruegen' with all three fruiting summer and autumn.

I've grown them from seed, but used regular varieties, and they were easy.  The alpines make small fruit so you'll need a lot of plants to get even a fair harvest out of them.
Have a friend (lives on a large property) who loves the idea of wild strawberry jam, and she spends 2 whole days picking the teeny things just to get a few pots of jam. Not my idea of a fun time.

Oh that's good to know maybe i'll forget the alpine type - thanks for the tip

Just occured to me - if you've got kids, then the alpines won't even make it to the jam stage. Mine simply sat in the patch and stuffed their faces. At least my berries were larger and I had a lot of plants to compensate.

That seems to happen with nearly all my fruit and peas - never make it home.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner - busy day at the lottie.
The seeds I grew were just regular strawberries, not alpine. I bought some cheap seeds from Park Seeds so didn't have a choice.

yes i grew temptation last season and had loads of med size strawbs in first season plants still in ground  leaves a bit brown from frost but think they will come back fresh again
