Opinion on Swift potato
« on: January 22, 2021, 11:26 »
T&M have run out of lady Christl and sent me Swift as a substitute. I have a vague recollection of doing Swift one year  and not being super impressed. Anyone have any experience of this spud? Thanks for any opinions.

I grow them. Great for bulking up quickly. 60 days from planting to harvesting  But only so-so in terms of taste in my opinion.

Fine if harvested young, but pretty tasteless once they get bigger, similar to Rocket. I’m growing them just because they’re easy to buy and I’ll eat them early.

T&M have done the same tome which is a shame as I love my Lady C! Does anyone know how best to judge when to harvest; do they flower?

There seems to be an issue with Lady Christl supplies as the seed potatoes have rotted apparently.  :(

My normal source thought she'd found an alternative supplier but they had rotted as well.

Not sure what this means for next year...

To be fair to T&M they are sending me some Charlottes next month at no extra cost.
I think I’ll try a couple of the Swifts for an early crop.
Any reason I can’t write a big S with a sharpie when chitting them, so I can tell them apart? Thanks

I think I'd just use two different egg boxes or seed trays to chit them, with labels as appropriate
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I always mark mine with a sharpie. Haven't noticed any ill effects yet.

I recommend you wipe gently first otherwise the sharpie clogs up pretty quickly.
