brassicas spray
« on: August 15, 2020, 17:43 »
I know I've been talking about brassicas spray before and I've been been experimenting with garlic and chilli spray to wage war on those white butterfly caterpillars and white fly this season :mad: with some results :)

however someone told me to try  Grazers G3 and said its very effective to use on brassicas so before i commit to buying i thought i would ask if anyone has used Grazers G3 on there brassicas and if so how you rate it ?

i visited an allotment today in another village and what a crop of brassicas they had all looking nice and fresh in rows no slug or caterpillar damage and only a single net on the top of the crop so i asked the gentleman who grew them if he could tell me what he used to get such results its a trade secret he said and wouldn't let on what he used but it wasn't Gazers so i don't know what he used i only know there the best brassicas I've seen growing in an allotment without using nets over the crop

Hi Rowland,
We've tried garlic clove spray but I'm not convinced of it's worth.
However i am reasonably happy with my brassicas because of the fine 'scaffold' nets that i've fitted.
I've got good purple sprouting, savoys, Springs, kale, spin' beets all doing very nicely.
I did find one cabbage white inside a net, but since then I've tent pegged the nets very securely all round, and that's done the trick,.
(plastic pegs are £1 for ten at Wilco's) If you get replies re other sprays i too would be interested lol.

We're all in this together, would it really have been a negative if he was to spill the beans?

This atitude [censored] gets my goat!

Cheers  Tony.

It's a power trip. Some guys are into it! Better in fact to leave the wasps etc to manage the caterpillars. Much more effective and less chemicals being spread around. Homemade sprays don't discriminate between insects and will kill off the beneficials as well.
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

I would be tempted to make up my own spray of bacillus thurigiensis. Selective caterpillar killer, safe for other insects, used by Charles Dowding etc.

I bought some of this from my local garden center and it .... works really well! I plant out my brassicas sometime in september when there are still lots of cabbage whites around and never had a problem with them after spraying with the product. Slugs and snails I use bait when it get wet and this works too... although the stuff that really works best is not available now.
However I really do agree with Aussie wasps do a great job in my garden they clean up lots of the eggs and larva of the CW.

i have to say I'm not 100% organic gardener but bacillus thurigiensis  really sounds worth trying wolveryeti  Jambop has also given it good reports from a once of spraying so I'm looking to see who stocks it

I used BT in the mid 90s it worked well. I thought it was later banned because of the possible harmful effect on non pests?

I have to say I was very skeptical when I bought it because it was not cheap and there are no alternatives now because of bans on the other systemic types that used to be so popular. That said it was great and I had no problems with CW damage  at all.

I don't fink garlic clove spray will harm any insect on God's clean earth!  :nowink:
The only affect it allegedly has is to create a smell on the brassica leaves that should allegedly deter the butterflies from laying eggs.
 I've yet to believe it works, but in any case it's harmless and organic.

All the bees and insects on my plot are precious, and i wouldn't use anything that would harm them.
All I've tried is garlic clove spray.
My question only asked if anyone had knowledge of other suitable organic stuff that could help.
I guess i took for granted that other allotmenteers would of gathered that.
I obviously should of spelt it out more clearly for the benefit of the cynical types on here.  :nowink:

i have to say that the garlic spray does seem to have worked this year although i am still looking to try bacillus-thurgiensis next season I've been vigilant in spraying our brassicas when i see any infestation of caterpillar eggs and dispose of any white butterflies that have found there way into the raze bed nets

although we haven't got round to properly growing summer cauliflowers yet I am intent on  growing reasonable brassicas whatever it takes to achieve this

It is easy to think that everyone understands what we mean, but mistakes happen.  I think if you re-read your original post, it doesn't shout out that you are against using anything other than deterrents.  Well not to me anyway  :)
