It's an automated set of mathematical equations
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As a well-behaved mod, given the recent news about 'exam results' based on algorithms I couldn't possibly comment, and I urge anyone else contemplating a reply to stick to maths!

An algorithm is a set of instructions for solving a problem or completing a task.

With mathematics, algorithm often refers to the procedures for solving a recurring problem. The steps for working out long division for example; solving for missing variables per the Pythagorean theorem is another example.

All of the science and math that underpins the workings of computer programs, web sites, even electronic elements of modern appliances, automobiles, digital thermometers, etc. is governed by highly complex algorithms. You use "a+b=c" all the time, even if you are not aware of it, the programmers have made it easy for all of us.

Back when I used to work for a living they were called scripts,  I'm guessing algorithm is more sexy?

Algorismus goes back to Medieval Latin, and al-Kwarism was the name given to a 9th century Uzbek mathematician, so script is the "sexy" new trend I suppose.
