Mass weed killing ahead of flattening and lawning
« on: July 16, 2020, 19:45 »
Just about to get our hands on the plot of land over the fence to clear of weeds, level and partially lawn to extend our garden. I’ve read the brilliant advice on this site about clearing an allotment of weeds. I was wondering if everybody agrees that chopping down and using  the likes of Roundup would be best before levelling? Is late summer a good time to disturb the land in terms of wildlife? All growth is 2 years old as the land was cleared and then fly tipped on by a neighbouring developer!

Difficult to see exactly what 'weeds' you've got there but yes, I would strim down as far as I could (having checked there aren't any solid items such as wood or metal that could cause danger to strimming) and then allow regrowth which I could then spray with a glyphosate based weedkiller.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I agree with Yorkie, strim it now and then glysophate spray the re-growth. The weeds will be weaker and more vulnerable to the weedkiller.

yep that's good sound advise from the boys Emma and i speak from experience you cant beat roundup or glysophate to do the job I've just sprayed one plot for a would be gardener and when another plot has been cut down that to will get the same treatment then after around 3 weeks I'm going to cultivate it for them to give them a starting chance

Hello a good brush cutter with a heavy duty line would be ideal (not a blade) come down on top of the growth it will shred the cuttings to about 4 inch long it also splits brambles and nettles these at this time of year regrow in   a few days  spray the new growth with roundup which is glyphosate at the brush wood rate of 35 ml/s of spray per litre of water to 10 square yards  of weeds   jezza

The strimmings also a good way to distress I've just been asked to mow a 1/4acre of grass that's full of seeded grass and wide flowers  big brush cutter and 3 bladed knife till be mown in an hour, back upper body and leg work out  for free (the workout not the grass cutting)  jezza
